Arties, the heart of the val d'Aran

The Val d'Aran is on the French side of the Pyrenees. This distinctive feature only enhances the independent spirit of the typical Pyrenean villages and ski resort of Baqueira that make up this Spanish valley.

Arties is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages here. Located half-way between the ski resort and the administrative centre, the village has retained its charm as well as an aura of authenticity and peace and quiet. The handsome wood and stone houses with their steep, slate-covered roofs are extremely fine examples of the local architectural tradition. The River Garonne, which rises up not far from here on the Plateau de Beret, flows through this small mountain market town, adding to its special atmosphere of quiet harmony. Arties is also the place to go for après-ski entertainment, with its friendly and relaxed Tapas bars. A typically Spanish and festively Mediterranean atmosphere... You shouldn't miss the Hotel Casa Irene which is the venue for gourmets and whose regular guests include the King of Spain. The Hospice de MONTGARRI, unique and unforgettable

Located in the heart of the mountains, Montgarri was once a hamlet used for summer pasturing and a place of pilgrimage. These days the hamlet's houses are in ruins and only the church and former hospice-presbytery remain. Luckily, these historic monuments have been saved and restored. The hospice is now a comfortable mountain hut masterfully managed by Kim, the hut's gourmet warden.

The only way to reach this haven of peace of quiet in winter is on skis or snowshoes or with a team of huskies or a snowmobile. For us, it is the mainstay of our trips. While your helicopter awaits you outside, you can sit around the huge fireplace and savour the delights of a traditional meal prepared by Kim. The welcoming and rustic mountain ambiance of the hut will no doubt make one of the special and unforgettable moments of your stay.
